New 5 Star Review of Down By Contact

I admit, this is just a filler post, because it just occurred to me that I haven't posted anything for a while. I was going to post yet another instance where Byden sounds like Trump, but why beat a dead horse into the ground at this point?

So, here's Ria F's pithy, yet wonderful, 5 star review of my football-themed novella Down by Contact on Smashwords.

***** "Wow. You hardly ever find respectable men like Dawson Drake in books. This book is worth more than 5 stars."

I have to say, I don't get enough of these! Thank you, Ria F.

The Second Wife

Job - http://www.biblevector.com/2011/03/bible-stories-job.html

The Second Wife (Job's Second Wife)

At the Devil’s doings,
(and with God’s Blessings)
came the annihilation
of Job’s animals, his children perishing in the collapse of a house,
the death and destruction
of all that Job cherished.

Job did not curse God,
as Satan believed he would, and
God rewarded Job’s faith
by restoring his prosperity.

Yes, He gave him twice as much as he owned before suffering the Devil’s trials!

Fourteen thousand sheep; and
six thousand camels; and
a thousand yoke of oxen; and
a thousand she-asses.

And there was even more:
seven sons and
three beautiful daughters named Jemimah, Keziah and Kerenhappuch.
Presumably, a new wife who bore him these seven sons and three beautiful daughters.

And Job was happy again.
Life was good.
God was Good.

But what did the nameless new wife think, when
a restored Job came a'courtin?
Did she ask: where is your previous family, oh, unlucky one?
Oh, God-fearing, pious one? Oh, cursed one?
Did she wonder why God destroyed Job’s family, his life?

And later, after she accepted Job into her life,

as she lay awake by Job’s side at night, in his new house,
did Job’s new, nameless wife keep her eyes open, wondering:
Will God one day also wipe me out, along with our seven sons and three beautiful daughters?

Weary Ghost

For Halloween, a rare new poem (and illustration)!

The Weary Ghost

The weary ghost trudges home,
Keds scraping asphalt,
bedsheet dragging, stained and tattered.

Long night: some tricks, and
some treats, enough of both to fill a pillowcase;
Some scares, and
some redemptions.

Once fun, now work:
The drag of decades.

One night a year is all
this little ghost can take anymore.

So much blood...
So much blood...

Morally Clueless

Texas has now passed a law effectively banning abortions after the detection of a fetal heartbeat.

That is great Pro Life news, and it gets better when we hear that other states are planning to follow this trend. Thanks be to God.

On the other hand, I was stunned when I heard this woman on the ABC World News broadcast of September 2, 2021 complain about how "cruel it is to make women drive 600 miles for a 5-10 minute medical procedure - in the middle of a pandemic."

ABC World News Report on the New Texas Pro-Life Law

Advance to the 2:18 minute mark in the video to hear this woman's complaint.

Because, after all, that's the cruel part in getting an abortion, the inconvenience of being forced to drive out of state to commit murder.

Who Said It? Next Part

Hey, thanks for stopping by. Welcome to my blog. Once again, it's time again to play Who Said It!

Please tell me who made this statement about immigration caps:

"I'm capping the refugee immigration to the U.S. to 15,000 people per year?"

Okay, this is a trick question. As of today (April 16, 2021) BOTH Trump and Biden have made this statement.

Please refer to this CNN link to learn more how Biden walked back his 62,500 refugees per year election promise.

Are you at all convinced yet that political parties don't matter? That either party will lie about anything that seems to give them an edge over the other party? Pay attention! They are two sides of the same coin.

I'm sure that I will (sadly) be able to play this game with you again at a later date. Meanwhile, enjoy Biden's press conferences. He sometimes tells the truth, although he often gets caught out when he doesn't remember those essential stats.

PS: This month Biden also upheld (in a way) Trump's US troop withdrawal agreement from Afghanistan, something Trump negotiated with the Taliban some time ago.

Also, I'll throw in a juicy rumor that I'm starting right here: Biden is set to take the position of Leader of Cuba's Communist Party, now that Raoul Castro has stepped down!

Techically, so this would make politics a three-sided coin...

Sign of the (End) Times

So, still reeling from Buick's new commercial selling S(YOU)Vs, I found this little gem that made CNN's "fashion" news headlines today (March 29, 2021):

Lil Nas X's unofficial 'Satan' Nikes containing human blood sell out in under a minute.

The 'Satan Shoes' will launch Monday as a limited-edition release.

I read that and I am without words. I would ask people to take a cursory look around their world, and see if they can spot the signs showing that Satan seems to be winning the war for our souls. Former churches being turned into breweries, wines labels with sacrilegious, titillating names, etc. I would argue that selling running shoes with human blood in them might be one of those signs that good people are not safe.

More about the shoes, from CNN:

"MSCHF confirmed March 29 that the limited-edition "drop" of 666 pairs sold out in less than a minute.
They were priced at $1,018 a pair, a reference to the Bible passage Luke 10:18 that reads: "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven." Each shoe's air bubble sole contains 60 cubic centimeters (2.03 fluid ounces) of red ink and "one drop" of human blood, according to MSCHF." CNN

Replete with pentagrams, upside down crosses, Bible references, and human blood, Lil Nas X feels quite comfortable serving Satan for the princely sum of US $1018.00 a pair. If Judas Iscariot had only known, he might have been able to monetize his actions even further.

UPDATE (March 30, 2021):
Well, thanks to good old-fashioned capitalism (and trademark regulations), there was a swift response from Nike, less than 24 hours after the published article. This headline from CNN Financial website:

Who Said It? Round 2

Yes, it's already time for another round of Who Said It!

This headline sourced from CNN:

DHS chief says border closed, won't give timeline for facilities capable of handling surge of unaccompanied children.

Under whose direction did the DHS chief declare this? Trump or Biden's?

Wednesday, March 17, 2021

Who said it? Round 1

I think this will be a recurring theme in the next four years.

Who said this: Trump or Biden?

Addressing Mexican immigrants: "I can say quite clearly: Don't come." CNN, March 17, 2021

"I Wish Every Day Was Diversity Day" MG Scott

A brand new month and with it brand new days to celebrate something.

March brings us, among many other things besides a day to "be Irish" on St. Patrick's Day, the following American designations:

  • Irish American Heritage Month
  • Music in Our Schools Month
  • National Celery Month
  • National Craft Month
  • National Frozen Food Month
  • National Nutrition Month
  • National Peanut Month
  • National Women's History Month
  • Red Cross Month
  • Social Workers Month

(Data sourced from http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/march.htm)

The title of the post sums up my displeasure. It is taken from The Office's Michael Scott, who naively and perfectly wishes that every day was diversity day.

Amen, Michael Scott! Can we stop highlighting certain groups at the risk of omitting others? And, I wonder, do Frozen Food, Celery and the Peanut really need a month to be celebrated? And what does that even mean?

How about all the people going out for a beer to celebrate St. Patrick's Day pray a rosary before heading out? Just a thought.

The Youniverse!

I caught the end of this commercial the other day (maybe on Super Bowl Sunday) and I was shocked to see the almost(?) full completion of our age's egoism, represented in a single term: the Youniverse.

My shock was soon replaced by my usual cynicism and everything returned to normal. Of course we are going to celebrate each of our own uniqueness(es) as a central point in the universe! After all, why not? This is what history has led to all along, we must be the focus of the universe, otherwise, each of us would only be a small part of it (possibly having a supporting role in God's magnificent plans), and we can't have that, can we? Not when the world has taught us that there is no one more important than me, nothing more worthwhile pursuing, than my own desires, goals, ego!

Two further points I'd like to end with: This is apparently a Dell commercial. I dislike this commercial and the term so much that I truly regret having recently bought a Dell, although my cheap machine is by no means able to bring me to the Youniverse. The other point, so ironic, is that the music accompanying the commercial, the "Youniverse Anthem", is by Why Mona. Maybe Dell didn't know that there was an actual band called "Youniverse"? Or, maybe they did...

If you haven't been bombarded with enough corporate-sponsored commercialism lately, here is Dell's commercial:

God's Providential Hand at Work

Happy New Year!

Yes, I've been negligent in writing this blog, but it's not as if the readership is clamoring for more!

I like to see how God uses me as an instrument of His will. This has happened, yet again, in the strings of cause-and-effects that have resulted in the writing of this post. Today Thursday January 7, 2021 is the feast day of St. Raymond of Pinafort. I read a few cursory pieces of information on his life, which led me to try to find his seminal text Summa Cassum - on the topic of codifying the sacrament of Penitence, both for priests and the faithful. More on that below.

Following some internet links in trying to find a pdf version of Summa Cassum further led me to an article about St. Raymond asking St. Thomas Aquinas to write a defense of the Catholic Faith to help convert Jews and Moors, which in turn led me to bookmark numerous works by St. Thomas Aquinas.

But, back to St. Raymond's Summa Cassum. After the remaining two runoff elections, the American election is now officially over. There were two immediate and significant results from the extreme left-leaning Democratic Party taking control of the Presidency, Congress and the Senate for at least the next four years. First, the dramatic events that occurred yesterday on Capitol Hill, which were nothing short of a coup, a takeover of the government by President Trump's supporters. Secondly, the forthcoming no-holds-barred attack on the gift of life that will be led by Vice President Kamala Harris, the prosecutor doing the abortion industry's bidding in going after David Deleiden.

Bearing all this in mind, this morning I was struck by these comments on passages from the Summa, which I found particularly apt to the United States. Professor Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira discusses how St. Raymond, preaching the Word of God to cities ahead of a Cardinal's visit, wonders about the spiritual health of a community. He goes through several arguments and counter-arguments as to how one can ascertain the degree of faith in a community. Then he reasons:

Notwithstanding, there is a test that we can apply to know when a city or an epoch is in a state of grace, and it works very well.

When persons in the state of mortal sin are together, there are three possible degrees of evil that can result. In the first degree, there are simply those who are in mortal sin, and nothing further. In the second degree, there are those who are glad to be in mortal sin; they have antipathy toward those who are in the state of grace. In the third and worse degree, there are those who promote mortal sin; they are openly hostile to those in the state of grace; they hate those who are good. Among those who represent these three degrees a curious psychological phenomenon takes place: they instinctively form a front against the good.

The consequence is that in a city where many people are in state of mortal sin, good persons are not well-received. On the contrary, in a city where many people are in the state of grace, the good are very well-received.

In epochs when saints are the object of general enthusiasm, one can say that most of the population is living in the grace of God. On the contrary, in epochs when saints are persecuted, it can be said that most of the population is not in the grace of God. The way an epoch treats a saint is the way it treats God. Most of the inhabitants of that epoch reveal their position before God in this way. The saint is an image of God; whoever loves the image, loves God, and whoever hates the image, hates God. (https://www.traditioninaction.org/SOD/j163sd_St.RaymondPenafort_1-23.html)

There we have it. The United States of America can be judged by how well they welcome and treat God, and also by how much they revile God in their lives.

Let us pray that God's Providential Will has a chance to reveal itself to, and in, this nation.
